Kirby-sur-Seine transports fans to France through music

“Acoustic guitar duo Kirby-sur-Seine is one of the favorite French musical groups in Houston. Their repertoire spans the classics of the best known 20th century pop tunes, bilingual or translated versions of some of the most popular American songs in France, and recent songs that have reached the top of the charts whether here or elsewhere. They began performing at the Bistro des Amis in about 2000. Then, they took an intermittent hiatus for several months while one or the other of the performers spent some time in France.

The two of them have performed concerts in well-known settings as large as Discovery Green, at Alliance Française, and at dozens of French, Belgian, Swiss restaurants, or wherever French music is appreciated.

In most of their concerts, when time and context allow, they take audience requests and perform encores. At the Christmas Party for Alliance Francaise of Houston on December 4, they performed background music for four hours nonstop, with favorites ranging from Edith Piaf’s “Rien de Rien” to “Les 3 Cloches“, “Le Port d’Amsterdam”, “Nathalie”, “Champs-Elysées”, and “Les Portes du Penitencier” (French version of “the House of the Rising Sun”) to a bilingual version of Nat King Cole’s “L-O-V-E” to Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky” in English. It seems there is no popular song that they can’t perform on short notice.

For those unfamiliar with Houston, Kirby Drive is a major crosstown corridor that links NRG Stadium […]. For those unfamiliar with France, the Seine River is 776 kilometers long and is a major commercial waterway navigable in part by ocean going vessels […].

The name Kirby-sur-Seine suggests an ambitious mental juxtaposition placing the amazing cultural diversity of Houston onto the very heart of France. That’s a bit of what happens when you listen to Kirby-sur-Seine.”  /AXS Contributor (Houston, TX)

But they also entertain at many other locations and special events, with a blend of classical French favorites like Edith Piaf’s “Rien de Rien”, “La Bohème”, “Natalie”, “La Vie en Rose” and “Le Port d’Amsterdam”, along popular translations of American tunes like Nat King Cole’s “L-O-V-E” , Daft Punk’s “Get Lucky” and Les Portes du Penitencier, the French version of “the House of the Rising Sun.[…]”

– R.Orenbuch (French Morning Texas)
